"...If I am only for myself, what am I?" (Mishnah: Pirke Avot 1:14) The medieval Kabbalists understood the world as being fractured, as being filled with shards of light from the creation that needed to be returned to their original source. This process of returning the light is called tikkun olam - repairing the world. They saw it as every Jew's responsibility to repair the broken fragments of our world and to elavate every person and thing back to God. In a world that is continually demonstrating how fractured it is, the concept of tikkun olam is gaining ascendancy once again. We look for the light in everything outside ourselves and try to elavate it. There are many whose lives do not seem to have light and there is clearly much pain and suffering in the world. It is our responsibility to act, and this is why members of BRS are becoming more and more engaged in social action. BRS is proud to have a Social Action Group - working for a better society for all.
